A Cover of Textbook of "Visual Culture & Literacy: Art Appreciation from Multicultural Perspectives":

Past-Present」, 「2. Western & Non-Western」, 「3.

A Report of Koi-art Project in Fukushima for USSEA column in NAEA Newsletter: NAEA

(USSEA:United States for Education through Art)に記載。

A Therapeutic Koi-art Project for children in Fukushima, Japan

Masami Toku
USSEA Child Art Exhibit Director
California State University, Chico

(Figure 1: Koi Proejct for children who are evacuated from nuclear plant crisis in Fukushima)

One week after the tragedy happened in Japan, I sent out the following message to my colleagues in Chico, California on March 18, for the development of a fund-raising event.

“As you already might know, Japan (Tohoku region – North part) suffered a big earthquake (M9) and tsunami on March 11. More than 18,000 people passed away and are missing so far. Thank you so much for your many messages. All my family and relatives are living in the central and southern part of Japan and they are okay. But I have many friends around the area and am still waiting for contact from them since it happened ... Some of you might remember my friend, Prof. Koichi Watanabe who came to participate in the first cultural event of the Way of Asia in 2008 to organize his art show and give his talk. He is from the area, Fukushima, of the nuclear plant crisis. Since the earthquake, he has been having a tough time contacting survivors, and he will be finally able to evacuate from the Fukushima area after the final meeting on Saturday, 4/19. He is one example of what my Japanese colleagues are doing in response to the disaster. I would like to do something for them and to do so, I need your HELP.”

This is just one example of many fund-raising projects in the USA for those Japanese who suffered from the natural disasters of earthquake and tsunami. People could not believe that this happened in Japan, the country best prepared for those types of disaster due to their past experiences. But it happened, and more surprisingly, it was one of the worst disasters in Japanese history with more than 27,000 lost lives.

After the event, I flew to Japan to visit Fukushima and observe the art project by Koichi Watanabe, an artist and art educator, at Fukushima University, Japan. Watanabe was organizing an art project for those children who suffered and continue to suffer from the disaster. He calls it the “Koi-art project.” It was an urgent therapeutic art project.

There are two Koi projects: one is a collaborative project to make a gigantic Koi (carp), each scale created by an individual, then combined to make one Koi (see figure 1 above: a gigantic collaborative Koi displayed in the public gym that serves as a temporary shelter for those evacuated from Fukushima).

The other is a call for artwork from all over the world for a single small Koi created and designed by each individual such as children and adults including artists and educators for hope and support.

(See figure 2: Yoshiomo Nara, an artist, and college students in Fukushima University who checked the artworks from Switzerland, and figure 3: Toku is creating a Koi when she visited Fukushima University)

The purpose of the project was to heal children through a kind of therapeutic art project. The Koi (carp), is a symbol of strength and a metaphor of hope; the fish swim again the current and go beyond obstacles to survive and thrive in this world.

I visited Japan to observe the current situation and the project itself in Fukushima on April 24, 2011. I asked where the idea came from, and Watanabe responded that he felt the necessity to give those refugee children an art project to have them focus on making something more positive, rather than focusing on the nuclear power crisis and its invisible & endless fear. It was also helpful to make a colorful display in a colorless refugee area

(see figure 4 above: white cardboard spaces in a public city gym) and the town of Fukushima.
(see figure 5: the Koi(s) are displayed in town starting from the 1st of May)

The 5th of May is a national holiday called Children’s Day, and there is a custom to display a family of Koi wind socks, representing our (adults’) hopes for children to grow physically and mentally healthy. Watanabe, who himself has suffered from this tragic event in Fukushima, also hopes this project will encourage those children to persevere in this tragedy. The call for artwork still continues and we hope many Koi will come from the US as well.

A Possible Publication related to Shojo Manga Power!

3. Power of Shojo Manga! Girls' Comics!: Multi-Perspectives from Global & Local Culture (by an Academic Press or a Textbook Co.)

Grils' Power!」

Possible Publications in Art & Education in 2011

1. Art Appreciation: Multicultural Perspectives (by Kendall Hunt Pub. Co.):

2. Voices from the Visual Pop-Cultural World (Anime & Manga): Did ArtED help your Career? Do We Need ArtEd in Schools? (by NAEA Press with Dr. Brent Wilson as a co-author)

Project Info in Art & Education in 2011

Girls' Power!」

Check it out(^_^)!

Globalization, Art, and Education

edited by Elizabeth Manley Delacruz, Alice Arnold, Ann Kuo, and Michael Parsons

Masami’s Blurb for

Section III: Global and Local Youth Cultures & Sites, and Online and On-Site School Practices with Young People

What kinds of visual culture influence global and local youth cultures? How does visual culture appear and transform the minds of youth and society?

No one doubts that youth are surrounded by visual culture: however, it does not mean that we know the mechanism of this cultural phenomenon. Our world, especially for young people, is no longer simple, but increasingly complex. The goings on of the youth world are invisible to most people, hidden beneath the many layers of the cyber world.

Delacruz introduces the third section of this book, which draws closer attention to global and local youth cultures and sites, and to the online and on-site educational practices of young people in different parts of the world. This chapter is indeed an informative showcase of diverse cultures from West to East based on research drawn from more than 20 countries. Ten authors, from graduate students to senior professors, from different cultures discuss questions and show examples of educational practices from their own cultural points of view of what is globalization in the youth world. Section III is definitely valuable and timely for today’s students, educators, and researchers to understand the global phenomenon of visual pop-culture and its implications for art education. This section is also a great communicative tool for us to predict the near future of global youth culture and society. —Masami Toku, Founder & Director, Shojo Manga Project, Professor of Art Education, California State University, Chico

各章をそれぞれの批評者がおり、私は3章「Section III: Global and Local Youth Cultures & Sites, and Online and On-Site School Practices with Young People(研究論文10本)」の担当とのこと。

下記のその私の書いた「Blurb(本の宣伝文)」。

Manga High Literacy, Identity, and Coming of Age in an Urban High School by Michael Bitz

前にもこのブログ(3/20/09)で紹介したマイケルビッズの本「Manga High Literacy, Identity, and Coming of Age in an Urban High School 」がとうとうハーバード大出版より上梓された。

From the Foreword:

"In Manga High, Bitz describes a project that is the sort of Holy Grail that many an educator pursues. Like the manga club at MLKHS, the afterschool clubs founded through the Comic Book Project have transformed thousands of kids into active learners, communicators, and creators of stories about their own lives."

—Françoise Mouly, Editorial Director, TOON Books and Art Editor, The New Yorker

Advance Praise:

“In this valuable book, Samantha, Tenzin, Treasure, Kischer, Keith, and other students come to life for us through their creations. Michael Bitz has a message, one that is often forgotten: When teachers understand that young adolescents have value, everyone learns, and everyone teaches. Comics, especially manga, are a powerful way to tap into youthful talent and energy. The result, as Bitz shows us, is confident, capable young people who, against the odds, are ready to be productive adults.”

—John Merrow, Education Correspondent, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and President, Learning Matters

“Manga High describes one of the most powerful literacy-based student-engagement projects I have encountered. It captures what many educators strive to accomplish—the use of a compelling medium to promote literacy and motivation. Teachers around the country will find this an invaluable resource, particularly those searching for literacy-based, hands-on projects.”

—Michael Nakkula, Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania

“As the manga phenomenon goes global, most American kids are content merely to draw manga-like characters. In Manga High, Michael Bitz follows kids as they grapple with the complex and demanding tasks of plotting, writing, editing, designing, drawing, and producing comics—and consequently shaping their own lives. Manga High reveals that the most engaging learning occurs when pedagogy is directed by kids themselves.”

—Brent Wilson, Professor Emeritus, School of Visual Arts, Penn State

“Why does Japanese manga continue to fascinate youth all over the world? This book uses students’ words and artwork to explore what manga means to them. I was impressed with the stories of the students’ personal lives and the way they used their artwork to find their voices to express their identities, deal with their problems, and find hope for the future. Manga High is an important and valuable tool for today’s classroom, relevant and engaging for any reader.”

—Masami Toku, Director, Shojo Manga Project

About the Author:

Dr. Michael Bitz, EdD, is the founder of the Comic Book Project and cofounder of the Youth Music Exchange. The first recipient of the Educational Entrepreneurship Fellowship at the Mind Trust in Indianapolis, he also received the Distinguished Alumni Early Career Award from Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Bitz has served on the faculty at Teachers College, Columbia University, and Ramapo College.

博士論文の内容構成:the Content of Doctral Thesis in 1998

Daniel Walsh, Curriculum & Instruction <> 私と2日後に生まれる海 in my tammy、美術教育のDr. Dr. Lizanne DeStefano, Quantitative & Evaluative Research Methodologies <> )

「Is this methodology really relevant?(この方法は本当に妥当なの?)」「What made you say that?

Mnaga High by Michael Bitz

私も実はBlurb(本の帯の宣伝文)を書いています。

Manga High
Literacy, Identity, and Coming of Age in an Urban High School
Manga High: Literacy, Identity, and Coming of Age in an Urban High School

By Michael Bitz

Since 2004, students at Martin Luther King, Jr., High School in Manhattan have been creating manga—Japanese comic books. They write the stories, design the characters, and publish their works in print and on the Internet. These students—African-American and Latino teenagers—are more than interested in the art and medium of manga. They have become completely engrossed in Japanese language, culture, and society.

Based on a four-year study, Manga High explores the convergence of literacy, creativity, social development, and personal identity in one of New York City’s largest high schools. The text is highlighted by reproductions and content analysis of students’ original art and writing. An appendix includes guidelines for educators on starting a comic book club. Available May 2009.

Why does Japanese manga continue to fascinate youth all over the world, when American comics don't? This book uses students’ words and artworks, to explore what manga means to the youth who participated in the Michael Bitz' comic book project (CBP). Bitz created the CBP in 2001 in NYC as an after school program to develop youth’s literacy skills based on their favorite style of art: manga. The CBP has spread all over the US to become a leading world youth literacy program. Don’t miss it (^_^)!

I was impressed with the personal stories of the students, their suffering of their personal lives and the way they used their artwork to find their voices to express their identities, deal with their problems, and find hope for the future. The CBP is an important and valuable tool for today's classroom, relevant and engaging for students. (March 16, 2009)

Please click here to get the full article (PDF)!「あの部分 ^_^!」

Toward to the Japan Tour in 2008

For me who grew up in Amami Ohshima (island) far from the main land, Japan, Tokyo was an ideal metropolitan. And America and Europe were far way from the reality in my dream. In those days, the distance between Tokyo and Amami was mentally and psychologically farther than that of Japan and the US (e.g. Tokyo and San Francisco). In my childhood, a monthly manga was only media to get the updated information that was shipped to bookstores in Amami from the Mainland Japan. For example, during a long day sometime in summer, I was sitting on white coral beach, looking at a boat in the ocean, and I was dreaming my future with the story of shojo manga. I was one of a dreamy girls as other girls were. For me, it might be the story of shojo manga itself that encouraged and pushed me to go beyond the dreamy line to come to the US.

Just a manga, however, it is manga. Although my shojo period was far passed away, the shojo manga brings me back to me to the dreaming period when I was a child. I don’t remember the face of my first’s love anymore, but I still remember my own sentimental feeling how I felt for him as it is almost just yesterday. I used to read the story in shojo manga by overlapping my own things. Now I can read the story to cherish my own sweat and bitter memory how I was when I was a girl in those days. Yes, manga is a very delicious media that can repeat to read the same story as a visual novel more than one time depending on the readers’ ages.

Introduction to the Visual Thinking Strategies (1997)

Philip Yenawine & Linda Duke

Linda: It's not based on an expert coming in, it's not based on any kind of access to fancy resources. It is something that can be done in any school.

Narration: The Visual Thinking Strategy curriculum provided a context for elementary school classroom teachers to help students find meaning in works of art. Art becomes the topic of facilitated discussions which stimulate thinking and the development of communication skills. This program is based on the research of psychologist Abigail Housen.

Philip: VTS (Visual Thinking Strategy) is really designed to reintegrate art into people's lives as it always has been through all of history. It teaches a process, a process of making discoveries on your own by using your observations and your capacity to draw on your memories, your associations, your experiences with the world to find certain kinds of meaning.

Linda: One of the things that VTS does very well is to convey the idea that art makes us think, that it's about human experience.

Philip: We don't teach thinking really, very often, we teach at right answers. We teach information and skills. And there's a skill involved in this in terms of careful thinking. But careful thinking is a matter of speculating and occasionally being wrong. There's not a great thinker in the world who hasn't had a bad idea. But that's the way we grow.

Linda: It is the nature of art that many different perspectives, points of view can be equally valid and the more of those that are shared and brought together by the group, the more in depth their understanding of the work.

Philip: There are a number of elements in the strategy that make it work. One area is asking good questions.

Linda: "What's going on in this picture?" is a very non-directive opening question, opens the floor for a wide range of responses.

Philip: We don't ask them why, we ask them "what do you see that makes you say that?" because that keeps them rooted in the picture and the world we share, it makes them give concrete evidence of the thought that they've had and is a much less threatening question than "Why do you think that?"

Another very important aspect of managing the discussion has to do with linking answers. Hearing a variety of disparate points that one says, "Ah, we see a lot of different possibilities here," or at another time we say, "We seem to be agreeing about certain kinds of things," and pointing that out.

Philip: The attempt is to not judge an answer as silly, not judge it as irrelevant, not say a question is a bad one but to say, "everything is legitimate."

Linda: In some cases, I think children don't feel that they're bringing a lot to the table that's valued by adults. But VTS is very much about the wonder of what people can bring to a conversation with careful looking and thinking and sharing ideas.

Philip: Being able to tell stories is probably being able to participate in one of humankind's oldest traditions. It's probably very important to get kids to find their own stories in the world around them and to tell their own stories to help them understand themselves. But if we ask them using a work of art as a starting, place quite often we have something concrete that makes it so that they don't just have to invent, but that they anchor their stories somewhere in a real world, a world that we all can share.

Linda: The basic strategies are so simple. They can be learned quite easily, so that if a teacher doesn't happen to have a background in art, he or she quickly discovers that that needn't hold them back at all.

Philip: What Housen's search has revealed is the richness of people's thinking when they are trying to find meaning in work of art.

Housen's theory is the basis for most of our decision making. She began a process 20 years ago that involves looking very closely at what people do when they look at works of art. This is what gives us the information we need to create teaching structures.

Art is very useful because it is concrete. It sits in front of you and there is data to pick apart. So what they learn is not only about a work of art, but very much about themselves and about each other and about a process of coming to meaning together collectively.

Linda: We hear teachers very often noting that students will look longer at visual materials, whether it's a petrie dish or a slide or a diagram or a photograph in their social studies look ....

Philip: In normal classroom discussions, there's a pretty predictable 25 % maybe 40% during some discussions, who participate. What we find typical in VTS discussions is that more like 90% do. And not talking about every slide, but over the course of even two or three slides, most kids have their hands in the air; most want to contribute.

Linda: So I often hear teachers saying, "I am so proud of my kids, I had no idea that so and so had ideas like this." It's just really beautiful to see this unfolding.
