A Cover of Textbook of "Visual Culture & Literacy: Art Appreciation from Multicultural Perspectives": 芸術鑑賞教育教科書のカバーページ完成！

１月の後半に出版会社に教科書カバー用のイメージを提出してから３ヶ月あまり、出版会社のデザイナー作成のカバーデザインを見せられること2回、どうしても納得できず、締切の迫る中、結局自分達（うちの芸術学部の同僚でいつもデザインを手伝ってくれるエレンと）で作ることにした。結果がこれ（見開き：右半分がフロント、背表紙部分が真ん中、そして左半分がバックカバーになります）。

出版会社の指定する（版権の問題があるので）イメージサイトから使用する可能性のあるイメージを選び出し、それでいくつかカバーデザインのパターンを３つ程。各イメージとともに、使用したビジュアルの情報をすべて書き出して、出版会社へ提出し、許可を待つ事に。

オーライが出たところで、高解析度のヴィジュアルを改めて送付してもらい、それで最終デザインを作成。これがその一品。かけた時間はたったの二日。信頼するデザイナーと一緒にやるとこうも時間が節約、そして好みの作品ができるのであーる。うれしい！

カバーデザインの私が課した条件は教科書の目的通り「Multicultural Perspectives」を表現すること。つまりカバーデザインに使われるヴィジュアルイメージは「1. Past-Present」, 「2. Western & Non-Western」, 「3. Diverse Media」を象徴していること。なのですが、、、出版会社のデザイナーの作ったデザインはどれもなぜか非常に日本的すぎる物ばかり。最初のは伝統的な墨絵（鯉）だったし、調整をお願いしできた２番目のデザインはなんとマンガ的な「芸者と女の子に龍と仏様」。うっ、、、涙。（ここで紹介できないのが残念ですが。）

出版会社のデザイナーをさしおいて「自分たちで作るというのは失礼」という気持ちがあったので、妥協するかどうか迷いましたが、、、自分達で作ってみて「あの時、妥協しなくて本当によかった。」というのが今の実感。

A Report of Koi-art Project in Fukushima for USSEA column in NAEA Newsletter: NAEA ニュースレター記事「鯉アートプロジェクト報告」」

先日の福島訪問そして渡邊先生主催の「鯉アートプロジェクト」報告を米国美術教育協会（NAEA：National Art Education Association) の隔月新聞のコラム（USSEA：United States for Education through Art)に記載。下記ご参照の程。

A Therapeutic Koi-art Project for children in Fukushima, Japan

One week after the tragedy happened in Japan, I sent out the following message to my colleagues in Chico, California on March 18, for the development of a fund-raising event.

“As you already might know, Japan (Tohoku region – North part) suffered a big earthquake (M9) and tsunami on March 11. More than 18,000 people passed away and are missing so far. Thank you so much for your many messages. All my family and relatives are living in the central and southern part of Japan and they are okay. But I have many friends around the area and am still waiting for contact from them since it happened ... Some of you might remember my friend, Prof. Koichi Watanabe who came to participate in the first cultural event of the Way of Asia in 2008 to organize his art show and give his talk. He is from the area, Fukushima, of the nuclear plant crisis. Since the earthquake, he has been having a tough time contacting survivors, and he will be finally able to evacuate from the Fukushima area after the final meeting on Saturday, 4/19. He is one example of what my Japanese colleagues are doing in response to the disaster. I would like to do something for them and to do so, I need your HELP.”

This is just one example of many fund-raising projects in the USA for those Japanese who suffered from the natural disasters of earthquake and tsunami. People could not believe that this happened in Japan, the country best prepared for those types of disaster due to their past experiences. But it happened, and more surprisingly, it was one of the worst disasters in Japanese history with more than 27,000 lost lives.

After the event, I flew to Japan to visit Fukushima and observe the art project by Koichi Watanabe, an artist and art educator, at Fukushima University, Japan. Watanabe was organizing an art project for those children who suffered and continue to suffer from the disaster. He calls it the “Koi-art project.” It was an urgent therapeutic art project.

There are two Koi projects: one is a collaborative project to make a gigantic Koi (carp), each scale created by an individual, then combined to make one Koi (see figure 1 above: a gigantic collaborative Koi displayed in the public gym that serves as a temporary shelter for those evacuated from Fukushima).

The other is a call for artwork from all over the world for a single small Koi created and designed by each individual such as children and adults including artists and educators for hope and support.

The purpose of the project was to heal children through a kind of therapeutic art project. The Koi (carp), is a symbol of strength and a metaphor of hope; the fish swim again the current and go beyond obstacles to survive and thrive in this world.

I visited Japan to observe the current situation and the project itself in Fukushima on April 24, 2011. I asked where the idea came from, and Watanabe responded that he felt the necessity to give those refugee children an art project to have them focus on making something more positive, rather than focusing on the nuclear power crisis and its invisible & endless fear. It was also helpful to make a colorful display in a colorless refugee area

The 5th of May is a national holiday called Children’s Day, and there is a custom to display a family of Koi wind socks, representing our (adults’) hopes for children to grow physically and mentally healthy. Watanabe, who himself has suffered from this tragic event in Fukushima, also hopes this project will encourage those children to persevere in this tragedy. The call for artwork still continues and we hope many Koi will come from the US as well.

A Report from 2011 NAEA conference by Prof. Maeshima: 前嶋先生のNAEA学会参加報告

以下「鬼の霍乱」でNAEAッ海に参加できなかった私の代わりに吉備国際大学の前嶋先生に学会参加の感想を書いてもらいました。ご参照の程。

「NAEA参加の感想ということになるとたくさんありますが、参加者が皆さん真剣で積極的なことでしょうか。
InSEAよりも「皆で話し合おう」という空気が強く感じられました。

個人的には、Teresaさんの教育要領の改訂に関する意見に大変興味を持ちました。音楽なども含めた統合的な芸術教育など、先進性とDBAEに基づいているであろう伝統、おそらくデューイにまで遡る知見に感化されました。これを聴けただけでもシアトルに行った価値がありました。
Teresaさんの著書か論文で読むべきものがあればご紹介下さい。

画材などの展示会場もはるかに広くてアメリカだなーと感じました。陶芸コーナーでは、日本人でシカゴで仕事をしている方ともお話し出来ました。

総合的な感想は、個々の研究の方向性も焦点の絞られたゴールの見える研究であることが感じられました。しかし客観性という意味では、美術教育である共通点でNAEAも日本的であるかとも感じました。この点は、私の勘違いかもしれません。」（５月２日）

「感想の追加をいたします。
会場の立地もよく、運営もとても気持良かったです。
朝早くから夜まで長い時間発表等が続き、充実した大会であると感じました。加えて何百もの応募があることを思うと美術教育が大切にされていることを実感出来ました。芸術に基づく教育は、つまり数学や物理学などの論理的思考を培う教科と対になる感念的思考を養う教科として位置づけられ、その意義も広く認識されているということでしょう。日本でも教育の両輪となる主要科目として位置づけられなければなりません。」（５月３日）

2011 NAEA conference at Seattle：シアトルでのNAEA学会便り

NAEA (National Art Education Association：米国美術教育学会）に1995年より参加しはじめて、１０年あまり。今回はじめての途中キャンセル。鬼の霍乱。予想外の出来事に、パネルディスカッションを２つ指揮することになっていた私は大慌て。結局、参加予定のパネラーの厚意と協力で無事ディスカッション終了との連絡を受け取ることができほっとしました。写真はその時のもので、参加してくださった吉備国際大学の前嶋先生から後で送っていただいたもの。感謝。

今回のリベンジ（もとい　やり直し）というわけでもありませんが、この夏のInSEA (International Society for Education through Art）国際学会会場、ハンガリーのブタペストで、再チャレンジ。それまでには体調を万全に整えて、ヨーロッパに飛びたいと思います。

（この学会を口実に６月初めに、家族でドイツに飛び、そして東へ移動しながらブタペスト、そして南下して、イタリアからアメリカへ帰国するという一ヶ月の旅の予定。現在執筆中の「芸術鑑賞教育学」の教科書の資料収集の目的でもあります。そしてそして少女マンガ特別三人展示会と関連講演会をこの夏再び国際交流基金のサポートのもと、ヨーロッパでスタート。楽しみな夏はもうすぐ。それまで、、、がんばるぞい！）

A Special Talk of Middle East Art by International Students at Art100 (4/28)：イスラム留学生による特別講演 at Art100 class

前にも別のブログ（TokuToku Journey）で話したかと思うが、昨今うちの大学に中東からの留学生がやたら多くなっている。私の教える一般教養クラスArt100: Art Appreciation - Multicultural Perspectives　にもその影響を見る事ができる。定数１２０名の内、約３０人がそう。２５％にもなる。これは喜ぶべきかなにか異常事態なのか、、、それはともかく、これを良い方に使わない手はない。このコールは多種多様なアートを理解することによって、自分をそして他者を理解するのが最終ゴール（一応私の意図するところは）。これらの留学生にイスラムアートを語ってもらおう。というわけで、今回二人の学生（アラブ首長国連合Abdalla Alsharji عبدالله الشارجي　とサウジアラビア：Majed Alayuni ماجد العيوني）に特別講演をしてもらうことに。

結果から先に。これがとても良かった。講演の前に内容を確認そして資料を送ってもらって話し合ったりしたものの、ふたをあけてみるまで「どんなかなあ」状態。それがPPT によく整理され、イスラムアートの根底にある宗教（コーランの影響）のこと、なぜ書体（カリグラフィー）がアートに洗練されたいったのかのプロセス、ショートビデオ（約１０分）の伝統的イスラムアートの概略説明、そして現代アートまで。最後には英語のアルファベットをアラビック書体（アルファベット）に置き換えて、自分の名前を アラビック書体で書くエクササイズをバックアップ（時間が余ったときの）として用意してもらっていたのだが、それも含めることができて、とてもよかった。いや予想以上によかった。さすが留学生（選ばれた学生？）。その中でもこの忙しい学期中、講演をやろうという気構えのある学生達なので、とても真摯にこのプロジェクトに対応してくれた。そのことに心から感謝。（来学期も、それも留学生の文化背景ごとに２つ三つやってもらうというのもよいかも。いやそうしてもらおう。学生たちにとってももっと身近にそして意義ある内容になると思う。）

今回の帰国で福島へも。渡邊先生企画実施の被災地支援プロジェクト「鯉アートプロジェクト」を見学。（*詳細＆その他の福島訪問での出来事については TokuToku Journey Blog　をクリック^_^)

左下３つの作品は、鯉フラッグプロジェクトもいうべきものでしょうか。各国に呼びかけて大人（アーティストや教育関係者その他）にも呼びかけて、作ってもらっている鯉（現在進行中）。上は椿昇さんがあっと言う間に３つ作り上げた内の一つ（三作品目。一緒に側におられたアーティストのヤノベさんらが、これがベストとおっしゃっていた！）。その下がこれまた突然のお誘い。渡邊先生の「そうだ徳先生にも作ってもらおう」と明らかに付けたし（笑）の依頼に「えっ私も？」と焦りながらも、福島大学のスタジオにて、即興のマジックでそして結構楽しんで作ったもの（前日にはアーティストの奈良美智さんやヤノベさんが、そして今日は椿さんが、、、となれば、正直私なんかが〜という気持ちになりました。）最後は海外からの作品で、なんとパッチワーク力作品。５月５日の全作品公開が楽しみです。（渡邊先生写真をお送りくださいね。）

2011 Far East Fusion for Relief Efforts in Japan (3/11/11):

皆さんのご協力、心から感謝申し上げます。これらの売上金（義援金）は、第一回の同イベント（２００８年度）にご協力そしてチコまでお出でくださり、講演並びに展示会を開いてくださった福島大学の渡邊晃一先生へ。うちの芸術学部ともとてもご縁のある方ですので、この義援金ブロジェクと実施の関係者とも話し合った結果、そのように決定。現在先生が実施されている被災地のこどもたちへの支援アートプロジェクトや関係プロジェクトの資金の一部にお使いいただければ幸いです。

Need your help for the disaster in Japan (3/11/11)!: 義援金支援プロジェクトへのご参加のお願い

下記３／１９付けで大学（芸術学部）の同僚たちへ、義援金支援のアートオークションへの参加を依頼する連絡を送付したときのもの。直後多くの反応があり、現在その準備に入っている。

３月１９日下記メッセージを送付した時点で、18,000人と報道のあった、当時の被災データ（亡くなられた方並びに行方不明の方々）は、3/22（火：西海岸時間）の今日、24,000人と報道されている。私の故郷奄美も昨年10月洪水災害に見舞われ、多くの被災者が出た。その時日本各地から多くの方々のご厚意があり、５ヶ月たった今、どうにか復興のきざしがみえはじめた矢先きの東北（関東）地区におけるこの甚大な災害。

災害のレベルは犠牲者の数ではない。確かにそうだ。昨年奄美での洪水被害では数人の犠牲者に過ぎない。それでも失ったものの大きさと残されたものの悲しみが決して少ないとは言えない。（その内のお一人は私の高校３年のクラスメートのお母さん。認知の母を奄美の施設に預けている私にとっては他人事ではなかった。TVに移る水没していく名瀬を見ながら眠れない夜を過ごしていた。それもたった５ヶ月前の話し。）

それでもそれでも、、、、今回はあまりにもあまりにも大きすぎて、、、残された方々のお気持ちを思うとどんな言葉も慰めにはならないのではないかと思う。反面、やはり何かやらずにはおかれない。それほど衝撃は大きかった。それもあの日本で（地震や津波の対策は万全と思われている日本で）起きたのだ。世界中を駆け抜けたこの映像とニュースは世界中を動かしていると思う。

何もできない米国在住の私達ですが、これからの皆様方の復興にむけて、私達ができること、できる方法で、ささやかですが始めさせていただきたいと思います。（*上左記写真はそのオークションを含めた全体プロジェクト「Far East Fusion」のポスター。クリックすると拡大いたします。）

The entire country of Japan is devastated due to the tragedy and they are still suffering under the cold & snowy weather. US TV, CNN, is dramatically announcing the tragedy and how Japanese people are quiet and patient regardless of such a huge disaster. Although they don't speak out or shout, they deeply suffer ...

This is an E-mail to ask your (and your students’) help to participate in my cultural events to raise funds for the suffers of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami (and the fear of nuclear plan crisis >_<,,,).

1. Art Students’ Club fund-raising art sale & workshops (10 AM – 3 PM, Sat., April 9 at Selvesters’ Café):

I am planning to organize the 3rd annual cultural event of Far East Fusion at Creekside Plaza and Selvester’s Café on Saturday, 4/9 (*Please see the attachment). I decided to make this event a fund-raising event for the Japan disaster. However, the event does not produce much money in general. So, I’d like to also have fund-raising workshops (10 – 3 PM) at Selvester’s Café that will be organized by Art Department students (or student clubs such as ArtEd DaDa). If you could encourage your students (especially your area’s student clubs) by selling any of their artworks for the fund-raising, I would really appreciate it. NO need to make anything new. Just bring the left-over artworks from the past classes or so. If you could let me know the possibility, I would really appreciate it.

2. Art Department Faculty Fund-raising Auction (3 PM – 6 or 4-7 PM, April 9 at Selvesters’ Café):

In addition, I am also planning to organize a fund-raising art-auction with your help at Selvester’s Café (3-6 PM or 4-7 PM on Saturday, 4/9). If you could donate any art items (small is great), I would really appreciate it. Again, no need to create any for this event, but look around your office and/or studio to find something for this event. If you could donate your artwork for this fund-raising auction, I would truly appreciate it. Also please let me know the possibility via this mail, hopefully sometime soon (^_^)! (I don’t have my own artworks much anymore, so I am planning to donate a traditional Japanese wedding kimono and/or a manga art created by a female’s comic artist for the auction.)

Jason, University Art Gallery, and his wife, Jenni, are now kindly helping me to organize this idea in a little more detail. I (or maybe Jason) will let you know about it sometime early next week too.

I know that this is a very short notice, but your HELP is essential. I truly appreciate your HELP!

Lastly, the President Office contacted me last Thursday, 3/17 to support all my fund-raising events as co-sponsor and/or collaborator.

The 1st Japanese Speech Contest in Chico (3/3/'11): 日本語スピーチコンテストのうれしい賑わい

我が街チコの日本人会（婦人会？）「JCWC (Japan Chico Women's Club)」の中心人物の一人でもある徳田恵子さん（大学の日本語スタッフ）とその友人、ミッシェルマーティン（PV高校の日本語教師）が今年始めて、「第一回日本語スピーチコンテスト」を大学内で開催することになった。高校で日本語を習っている高校生達や近くのコミュニテーカレッジButte Collegeの学生達が中心に参加していました。大盛況！

息子の海の親友ビスマン君（インド人）もまだなんと中学１年というのに、その高校で日本語を習い始めて約１年、ビギナーレベルで出ていました。タイトルは「私の家族」。うちの息子はさすがに毎年日本（奄美）に一月ほど帰っているせいか、発音はばっちりだけど、ビスマン君みたいにとても上手には書けない。これに刺激を受けて、うちの息子も再度ライティングの方もがんばってくれるとうれしいのだけれど。
賞品に目がくらんで、来年は僕も出ようかなあと言っている。動機は別として、その気になるのはよいことである。
